Albums: Split 100 points among your top 10 albums. No less than 5 points and no more than 30 for each album; whole numbers only. Year-of-impact rule that I finally have to make explicit thanks to Chappell: You may include older albums that in your judgment had their greatest impact in 2024. Any such albums that receive more votes this year than last year will have last year's points included in this year's totals.
Singles: Name your top ten singles. If you listened to a song/track outside of the context of an album, it counts as a single. Asterisk rule: You may put an asterisk by one single to give it an extra half-point. If you don't put an asterisk by any single, the half-point will go to the first single you name unless you state your list is unranked. The asterisk doesn't have to be given to your number one single (you might decide to vote tactically.)
EPs/mini-albums: Name up to five EPs or mini-albums. Assign an averageof 2 points to each of these EPs, with each entry getting no less than 1 point and no more than 5; no zeroes. (So if you name one EP it gets 2 points, while if you name 5 EPs you can split 10 points.) It's left to your judgment as to what counts as an EP/mini-album, but “shorter and fewer tracks than The Beatles’ Second Album” (26:25, 11 songs) is a good rule of thumb. You are encouraged to also vote for EPs in the albums poll if they have given you comparable pleasure to your favorite albums.
Special category:Artists of the century: Vote for your five favorite musical artists of the 21st century. You don't have to assign points. Lists will be assumed ranked unless otherwise stated. Does the century start in 2000 or 2001 oh who cares nerd.
Anyone reading this is eligible and encouraged to vote; ballots from women and people of color are especially encouraged. (Kogan-suggested addendum: and country fans, metal fans, family members who don't know why you spend so much time on this, and casual fans.)
Three ways to vote:
Post your ballot in this thread. If you want to plug a longer or better annotated list elsewhere, please include a link.
Post your ballot in the relevant in the (private) Expert Witness Facebook group. (To join the group, send me a Facebook friend request (there’s only one of me on there I think) asking to be added; I’ll do so and then you can unfriend me at your leisure. Be warned that if you’ve got a P4K 8.5 or higher in the last ten years we’ve probably made fun of you in there.)
Email your ballot to bradluen@yahoo.co.nz with "Expert Witnesses Poll 2024" in the subject line.
Deadline: Sunday 19th January at 11:59 pm in some existent time zone.

"Anyone reading this is eligible and encouraged to vote; ballots from women and people of color are especially encouraged."
I would have written, "ballots from women, people of color, country fans, metal fans, family members who don't know why you spend so much time on this, and casual fans are especially encouraged." Not that many - or any - will see this, but I really don't want us to keep sending the message to the white working class that they're not welcome. Also, maybe there's a less precious way to signal "people of color" (as my wording tried to do for the white working class).
Short comment that I hope I'll follow with a longer comment. My "Artist" list is ridiculous. of course, but its ridiculousness got me to thinking that *none* of my most cared-about musical artists of the last 75 years have been able to retain the cared-about greatness for over a decade, and many not even close to that. My awkward "cared-about greatness" covers my thinking that if I knew more I'd probably say that Miles's greatness crosses decades but the greatness I care about came in '74-'75. Lieber-Stoller break through for more than a decade but they're not in my top caring, whereas their sometimes employees Ellie Greenwich/Jeff Barry are tops in my caring but for a more concentrated output. Therefore: Eminem, Ashlee. [Generalization not true in all fields of endeavor. Filmmaker John Ford gets three decades of cared-about greatness, with a lot of turkeys mixed into his greatness, of course.]
I can't understand why I haven't seen The Rise and Fall... abbreviated before. TRAFOAMP has a surprisingly good ring to it when you sound it out like a word
I've tried and tried to find someplace that has Dlala Thukzin and Erik Hegdal but with no success. Do you know - or have any suggestions - where they might be? I don't know Singles or EPs but will have to check out the Margaret Glaspy.
"Artists of ... ": very good choices except that I wouldn't include Wussy. A good group with some good to very good records but that is what they are supposed to be / do. That there are few who are doing that is a sign of the times and doesn't elevate them to a higher level.
And thanks for running the poll; greatly appreciated.
What a list. Combines the obvious with the maybe with the 'huh' and a point spread that obviously is intended to help a select couple of albums and yet produces a fascinating study of popular music in 2024. And also indicates that the balloter may not have received - postal strikes and other delays - albums that might have warranted consideration nor been able to listen as closely to as many due to it being a bad year for the ear. Still, there never would have been anything close to 190 best of + X reissues and 75 over other categories.
Hopefully I did this right…

I may write a comment-response to this elaborating on concepts such as "artist" and "century." Thank you Brad.

If by "find" you mean somewhere you can hear the music, here's Dlala Thukzin's Finally Famous Too on YouTube:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLGFgtJKqvGk0JD506pC1eNXvS-HKafLMj
And here's Eirik Hegdal Eklektisk Samband's Turnchest on YouTube:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kVOCQNLIemh882lSN8MmvW71-vWpqI7iA
(When searching "Eirik," don't forget the first i.)
If by "find" you mean where to *purchase* them, you can find Turnchest at Particular Recordings:
https://www.particularrecordings.com/shop/eirik-hegdal-eklektisk-samband-turnchest
You can get Finally Famous Too on mp3's through Amazon.
Forgot about this.
